Southeast Christian School Convention

On September 26-28, 2012 the SCACS will join the GACS (Georgia Association of Christian Schools) and NCCSA (N.C. Christian School Association) to host the Southeast Christian School Convention at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. Nearly 2,500 Christian Educators and over 100 exhibitors attend this very popular event.

This year the general session speakers are David Gibbs III (Christian Law Association), Kurt Skelly (Pastor, Harvest Baptist Church, Natrona Heights, PA) and Sam Horn (President, Central Baptist Theological Seminary).

It’s hard to believe! The upcoming conference will be 32 years in a row that SCACS has hosted this event. This annual conference is for Pastors, Administrators, and Board Members of all Christian schools, members and non-members. It is also for Directors of Church Child Care Centers. The Conference begins with the Legislators’ Breakfast at 8:00 a.m. and concludes at 10:30 a.m. We take this time to meet and talk with our Legislators and Constitutional Officers about what our schools and centers do for the children of South Carolina. It is also a great opportunity to personally thank them for the work they do on our behalf in state government.

Member schools may each bring up to four students (Juniors or Seniors only). While we are sorry to have to limit the number of students, space limitations dictate in this matter. Let me encourage each school to bring students; it is an opportunity to expose our governmental leaders to what we are all about—our students. It is also an opportunity to foster an interest and sense of responsibility in our students who will be the next generation of Christian leaders in South Carolina. During the business meeting, students are given an opportunity to go onto the Capitol grounds for an activity.

You will note that we are back at the Blatt Building again this year—our purpose is to more effectively reach our legislators and constitutional officers. Because of the arrangement set up by the General Assembly, they prefer these functions be held on the Capitol grounds. We are able to return to this format again this year to try to reach a broader spectrum of our elected officials. We will let you know how we will have to adjust as we approach the breakfast.

The annual SCACS business meeting will begin at 9:15 a.m. This will be an important time for our association in light of a great number of challenges that we must meet in the coming months. The business meeting will include many items that are necessary for the ongoing operation of our association, including the election of board members. Each school should have already received a proposed list of nominees as well as documents explaining proposed changes to our constitution.

It is vital that you take part in this business meeting and conference. This is your organization and we need your participation. Every SCACS member school is asked to have a representative in attendance. Please do not put this invitation on the back burner. This is an extremely important conference.

Now for a final plea. Please call your legislators and ask them to meet you there. No, it doesn’t cost you extra to invite them. The legislators and constitutional officers come as our guests. We will send a formal invitation to each one of them, but your personal phone call or contact works wonders. A list of the legislators in your area is enclosed in this mailing. I trust I can count on you to make those calls. It will make a difference.

AACS National Fine Arts Competition

The 2011 National Competition was held on April 12-14 at Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC. All the students that represented South Carolina performed well and we had 16 participants place from 4 different schools. We had one group that performed in the showcase on Thursday evening, Hampton Park's Small Vocal Ensemble performed and did very well.

Every year AACS gives the Cup of Excellence to the state that scores the most points (points are given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners). South Carolina tied for 3rd with Tennessee behind Virginia and Illinois.

Congratulations to all the students who participated at Nationals.

2010 Boys' Volleyball Tournament

The Boys' Volleyball Tournament was held at Union Christian Day School in Union on Thursday, October 28. Mountain View won the consolation game against Union. Carolina won the championship 3-0 against Blessed Hope.

The players chosen for the All-Tournament team were Jacob Taylor & Ben Hines from Carolina, Zach Westall & Seth Grant from Blessed Hope, Micah Ramsey from Mountain View and Grant Shetley from Union.

The Girls' Soccer State Tournament was held April 23-24, 2010 at Oconee Christian Academy in Seneca. Step of Faith (4) defeated Emmanuel (0) in the consolation game. Hampton Park (4) defeated Westgate (2) in the championship game.

The State Softball and Baseball Tournaments were held at Richard L. Gray Park in Hardeeville, SC on April 30-May 1, 2010.

In the 1A Softball Tournament, Emmanuel defeated North Walterboro in the consolation game. Maranatha defeated Abundant Life in the championship game.

In the 2A Softball Tournament, Northside defeated Conway in the consolation game. Sumter defeated Grace in the championship game.

In the 1A Baseball Tournament, North Walterboro defeated Tabernacle in the consolation game. Abundant Life defeated Calvary-Belton in the championship game.

The Golf Tournament was held on April 26, 2010 at the Wedgefield Plantation Golf Club in Georgetown, SC.

In the 1A tournament, Carolina (327) defeated Orangeburg (384). The 1A Individual Champion, Blake Counts from Carolina, shot a 92.

In the 2A tournament, Oconee (373) defeated Oakwood (378). The 2A Individual Champion, Alex Bruce from Westgate, shot a 83.

Basketball and Cheerleading State Tournament

The State Basketball Tournament was held February 18-20, 2010 and the Cheerleading Competition was held on February 20, 2010, at Hampton Park Christian School in Greenville.

In the 1A Tournament, East Side defeated Heritage in the consolation game and Victory defeated William Thomas for the 1A Girls' Championship. Calvary/Belton defeated Abundant Life in the consolation game and William Thomas defeated Tabernacle for the 1A Boys' Championship.

In the 2A Tournament, Oakwood defeated South Pointe in the consolation game and Hampton Park defeated Northside for the 2A Girls' Championship. Emmanuel defeated Calvary/MB in the consolation game and Hampton Park defeated Fountain Inn for the 2A Boys' Championship.

The Cheerleading Competition was held between the consolation games and the championship games on February 20, 2010. Hampton Park placed 1st, Northside placed 2nd and Emmanuel placed 3rd. Mountain View received the Spirit Award.

The State Volleyball and Soccer Tournament was held October 29, 30, & 31, 2009. The Boys' Volleyball Tournament was held at Blessed Hope in York on Thursday, October 29. Union won the consolation game against Hawthorne. Blessed Hope won the championship 3-2 against Carolina.

The Girls Volleyball and 2A Boys' Soccer Tournament was held at Northside Christian School in N. Charleston on October 30-31. Blessed Hope won the consolation game against Abundant Life 2-0 and Heritage won against Easley 3-1 for the 1A Volleyball Championship. Northside won against South Pointe 2-0 for the consolation game and Hampton Park won against Oakwood for the 2A Volleyball Championship. Westgate won against Calvary/MB 3-1 for the consolation game and Hampton Park won against Northside 3-1 for the 2A Soccer Championship.

Essay and Poetry

This competition is open to any of your students in grades 4-9. There is no cost to you or your students. Students who win the state competition will be awarded special medallions to signify their achievement. National winners will each receive an 8 x 10 plaque.

Remember, writing is an important skill to develop. Help your students develop that skill. This competition will be a challenge and an encouragement to them.
